Sego
A coal town in a narrow canyon in the Book Cliffs, worked from about 1910 to 1955, reached along the grade of its own railway.

Sego lies in Sego Canyon in the Book Cliffs, roughly five miles north of Thompson Springs in Grand County. Coal was the reason for it, and the town was inhabited from about 1910 until 1955.
The access is unusual: you drive in along the grade of the Ballard and Thompson Railroad, a spur off the Denver and Rio Grande Western that the town's founders built specifically to move their coal out. The road is the railway.
Stone buildings, a boarding house and the remains of the tipple survive in the canyon. Much of the historic fabric was damaged by flooding in October 2017, so what stands is less than photographs from a decade ago show.
The canyon also holds substantial rock art panels from several periods, on the way in. They are protected and they are far older than anything to do with coal.
