Landmarks and memorials
Some places are kept because something happened there. The keeping is often the more interesting story.
Two kinds of marker
A lighthouse and a battlefield are both preserved, but for opposite reasons. One is kept because it still does a job, or did until recently. The other is kept because of a single day, and everything about how it is presented is a decision somebody made about how that day should be remembered.
The memorial sites on this list are the ones where that decision is visible. Topaz is a flat patch of desert with foundations and a monument, and the reason it looks like nothing is that the government of the time wanted it to be nowhere.
