A county seat with two hundred and twenty five residents, still administering a county from buildings that survived the 1923 fire.

Goldfield is the county seat of Esmeralda County, which is an odd status for a town of 225 people, down from 440 in 2000. It sits on US 95 about two hundred and forty seven miles southeast of Carson City.
The boom came in the first decade of the twentieth century, and it was substantial: between 1903 and 1940 the mines here produced more than eighty six million dollars at the prices of the day.
A fire in 1923 destroyed much of the town, which is why the surviving buildings stand with gaps between them. The courthouse and the Goldfield Hotel are the landmarks, and the hotel in particular has acquired a reputation among people who look for that sort of thing.
Unlike a preserved park site this is a functioning if very small town. The county offices are real and the people are not in costume.
