Garnet
A hard rock town in the Montana hills that emptied when the mines closed, preserved by the Bureau of Land Management and reached by a rough road.

Garnet was thriving in the 1890s and emptied as the local hard rock mines shut. The remaining buildings have been stabilised and are open to visitors, and the site is managed by the Bureau of Land Management within its Garnet Resource Area.
It sits eleven miles north of where Interstate 90, US Route 12 and Bear Gulch Road meet. The access road is the limiting factor: it is unpaved, steep in sections, and closed by snow for much of the year.
In winter the site is reached on skis or a snowmobile, and two of the cabins are rented out to people willing to get there that way. That is an unusual arrangement for a ghost town and it draws a particular sort of visitor.
Because it is BLM ground rather than a state park, facilities are minimal. Bring water.
