Dugway Pass and Black Rock Station
A steep cut through the Dugway range, and a station named for the volcanic rock beside it.

Dugway Pass takes the trail over the range of the same name. The grade is short and steep, and the original road builders cut it by hand, which is where the name comes from: a dugway is a road dug into a hillside.
Black Rock Station sat below the pass, named for the dark volcanic outcrop that marks the spot. Like most of the desert stations it is now foundation stone and a sign.
The Dugway Proving Ground occupies a large block of land north of here and it is closed to the public. Pay attention to boundary signage; this is one of the few places in the desert where wandering off the road has consequences beyond a puncture.
This is remote, unpaved country with no fuel, no water and thin phone coverage for a hundred miles. Carry more water than you think you need, tell somebody your route, and do not attempt the crossing in a low car after rain. The BLM manages most of the road; call the Salt Lake Field Office for current conditions rather than trusting any page, including this one.
