Lookout Pass
The climb out of Rush Valley and the first real gap in the mountains heading west.

Lookout Pass carries the trail over the northern end of the Onaqui range, and it is the point where the country changes character. Behind you is Rush Valley with its ranches and its road. Ahead is the Great Salt Lake Desert, and from the top of the pass you can see how much of it there is.
A station stood here to serve the climb. What draws most visitors now is not the station but the small pet cemetery near the summit, kept by a station keeper's widow, which is an odd and rather touching thing to meet on an empty mountain road.
The graded road over the pass is usually passable in a normal car in dry weather. That stops being true within a few miles of the far side.
This is remote, unpaved country with no fuel, no water and thin phone coverage for a hundred miles. Carry more water than you think you need, tell somebody your route, and do not attempt the crossing in a low car after rain. The BLM manages most of the road; call the Salt Lake Field Office for current conditions rather than trusting any page, including this one.
