NEW ENGLAND HOLOCAUST MEMORIAL – BOSTON, MA

By: Jaromy Jessop

"Look at these towers, passerby, and try to imagine what they really mean - what they symbolize - what they evoke. They evoke an era of incommensurate darkness, an era in history when civilization lost its humanity and humanity its soul . . ." "We must look at these towers of memory and say to ourselves, No one should ever deprive a human being of his or her right to dignity. No one should ever deprive anyone of his or her right to be a sovereign human being. No one should ever speak again about racial superiority... We cannot give evil another chance." Elie Wiesel

Six million numbers are etched in glass in an orderly pattern, suggesting the infamous tattooed numbers and ghostly ledgers of the Nazi bureaucracy. Evocative and rich in metaphor, the six towers recall the six main death camps, the six million Jews who died, or a menorah of memorial candles……………………..http://www.nehm.com/intro.html

As I was walking the Freedom Trail in Boston one day my wife and I came upon a heartbreaking, solemn memorial near Fanueil Hall. It appeared very strange from a distance. 6 Tall glass pillars shining in the bright sun of a late winter day. As we approached the columns we read a sign announcing this place as the “New England Holocaust Memorial”. The walkway took us through passages cut out of the bottom of each column. Etched in the glass of these monoliths were countless numbers representing the 6 million Jews who were murdered by the Nazis during World War II. Each column is representative of one of the 6 main Nazi Death camps. I found it impossible to walk through to the other side without a tear welling up in my eyes. Even now when I write about it and think of the senseless, creul, torturous, barbaric and un-necessary murder of millions of men, women and children my heart is overcome with sadness. How many lives were destroyed? How many loved ones lost. How many families wondered at the fate of thier loved ones? How could the Nazi soldier stand by and listen to the screams, smell the burning flesh or rot of decaying corpses. Gaze upon the mounds of discarded personal items………shoes, wedding bands, clothes, even piles and piles of human hair that was shaved off before the final heinous acts in the gas chambers and glue factories.

I don’t like to write of such things but it is so important for us to study history, remember atrocities and learn from the hatred that caused such horrific events for as a wise man once said………”If we do not learn from History, we are destined to repeat it”. As you stand beneath the hollow columns, air and steam emanates from beneath the grates at your feet and it is symbolic of the embers of the bodies of those who perished. Such a heartbreaking, chilling and disturbing experience. This memorial brought my excitement for the Freedom Trail to a grinding halt and although it was terrifying………..I recommend it to anyone visiting the Historic sites of Boston. As you wander through the cradle of Liberty and names such as Samuel Adams, Paul Revere and Thomas Paine travel through your head, our Freedom and Liberties become that much more sacred and important. The value our society and great Country places on human life and the freedoms of speech, right to assemble and the freedom of religion which are often taken for granted are brought into crystal clear focus as you wonder at the impossible amount of numbers etched into the glass……….each one a human life. Each one of those who perished had hopes, dreams, lovers and a desire to live and be free. Americans, learn from History, the founding of our Nation and the suffering that has occured around the world. If you are ever in Boston, make your way to Fanueil Hall and then look for the glass columns on Congress Street. Visit this site and learn from it. Share the message with friends, family and aquaintences so that this unspeakable chapter in the History of the World will never be repeated.  Never Forget………….Never Forget………………….Never Forget………….
